Macedonia Case Challenge 2009 – biggest case study competition in Macedonia

 

 

Macedonia Case Challenge 2009 was held from 10 – 12 April 2009 in Skopje. The Opening ceremony of the competition took place at the Debate Hall of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. The participants were addressed by Mr. Mišo Dokmanovic, President of ISIE, Ms. Jasmin Moser, Program Coordinator of Balkan Case Challenge, Mr. Heinz Habertheuer, Head of Austrian Coordination Office in Skopje, Mr. Matt Field, Political Advisor in the EU Mission to Macedonia and Ms. Vasilka Salevska, Representative of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. The opening ceremony was followed by a cocktail.  

The trainings and the actual competition were organized at the Business Start – up Center of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, a partner of Macedonia Case Challenge. The participants received training in presentation skills and career coaching as well as the case competitions. Over 45 students out of 80 who have submitted an application for the competition participated in the training and competed in the 4 disciplines: Law Moot Court, Model European Council, Business and IT plan competition.

The competitions were organized on 12 April 2008. Over 14 jury members selected the winners of Macedonia Case Challenge who will travel to Vienna in July 2009 where they will have chance to compete with students from 11 other countries in the region.

The winners of the competitions were announced on the closing ceremony which was held in the EU Info Centre in Skopje.

Since 2007 ISIE is partner of World University Service – Austria within Balkan Case Challenge Project. Balkan Case Challenge is financed by Austrian Development Cooperation.

European Defence Capabilities Conference in Prague

 

 

 

The Secretary of ISIE, Mr. Zoran Hristovski was invited to participate at the conference “European Defence Capabilities” held in Prague on 22-23 January 2009. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic as a part of the programme of the Czech Presidency of the European Union and the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies.
The main theme of the conference was the development of European defence capabilities in support of military operations with panels including operational commanders, high-ranking military officials, experts as well as NATO representatives. Mr. Hristovski presented his views at the panel “Making European Defence a Reality at 27; Operational experience and contributions from smaller-to medium –sized nations”.

Case study method workshop in Skopje

As a part of the Balkan Case Challenge project, a workshop on the use of the case study method in the teaching process was held at the Faculty of law, Ss Cyril and Methodius in Skopje on 10 February 2009. Over 35 professors and teaching assistants in the field of law, business and economy as well as university management staff from the public universities in Macedonia attended the workshop.  
The workshop was organized by WUS Austria and the Institute for Strategic Research and Education (ISIE). The Balkan Case Challenge is project financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation.
Follow-up activities in the field of the use of case study method in the teaching process will continue in the period 2009 – 2010.

Macedonia Case Challenge – first case study competition in Macedonia

The first student case competition in Macedonia, Macedonia Case Challenge, was held from 18 – 20 April 2008 in Skopje. The Opening ceremony of the competition took place at the Government of the Republic of Macedonia and the trainings and the competition at the Faculty of law in Skopje. Over 35 students out of 215 registered for the competition competed in the 4 disciplines: Law Moot Court, Model European Council, Business and IT plan competition. The winners of Macedonia Case Challenge will travel to Vienna in July 2008 where they will have chance to compete with students from 11 other countries in the region.

As a part of the commitment for establishing a linkage between high education and business, a special recruitment event was organized on the last day of the competition. Many companies and organization-partners were represented at the recruitment event.

Macedonia Case Challenge is a part of the regional Balkan Case Challenge Project organized by WUS Austria in 11 other countries in the region and financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation. This kind of the competition was organized for the first time in Macedonia.

ISIE is the local partner of WUS Austria in Macedonia within the Balkan Case Challenge Project.

ISIE leadership at NATO conference in Romania

The President and Secretary of ISIE, Mr. Miso Dokmanovic and Mr. Zoran Hristovski were invited to attend the conference “NATO in South Eastern Europe: Reconstruction and Security in the Balkans” from 3 – 4 March 2008 in Timisoara, Romania. The situation in the Balkans was debated by important NATO and EU representatives, by experts of regional organizations, ambassadors, and by leaders of the Romanian political and military life as well.
Mr. Dokmanovic presented his paper on the situation in Kosovo and its repercussions on the security in the region and Mr. Hristovski discussed the accession of new countries from the Balkans to NATO.
This conference was a part of NATO Bucharest Summit and was organized by Institute for Public Policy – Bucharest and the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies – UK. ISIE extends its cooperation with World University Service Austria

 

The Institute for Strategic Research and Educations (ISIE) extended its cooperation with World University Service (WUS) Austria within the Balkan Case Challenge Project. Balkan Case Challenge is the biggest international case study competition in South Eastern Europe. BCC is consisted of four competitions: Law Moot Court, IT Plan Competition, Business Plan Competition and Model European Council. Balkan Case Challenge is project financed by Austrian Development Cooperation.

According to the signed agreement between WUS Austria and ISIE, BCC’08_Macedonia Case Challenge, the sub competition for the Balkan Case Challenge, is going to be prepared and implemented by ISIE. The event will include training, competition and recruitment event.

BCC’08_Macedonia Case Challenge will be held from 19 – 20 April 2008 in Skopje.

The associate of ISIE Elena Mihajlova has participated in the 20th Winter Course on "Terrorism, Counterterrorism, and Human Rights". The course was organized by the International School on Disarmament and Research on Conflicts in Andalo (Trento), Italy from 14 – 21 January 2007.  
 
12 July-2 August 2008

Mr. Sasa Dokmanovic, junior associate at ISIE Institute, attended The American Institute on Political and Economic Systems – AIPES in Prague, that was organized by The Fund for American Studies in cooperation with Georgetown University and Charles University. During his visit in Prague he had a unique opportunity to meet the US Ambassador in Czech Republic Mr. Richard W. Graber and the Former Prime Minister of Spain Mr. Jose Maria Aznar.

The President of ISIE, Miso Dokmanovic, attended the Salzburg Global Seminar – “Young Leaders Summit: Global Scenarios and Strategies for 2030”. Mr. Dokmanovic was the only leader from Western Balkans invited to the summit.
 
 
18 June – 14 July 2007
Two ISIE associates - Julija Brsakoska - Bazerkoska and Elena Mihajlova participated at the 14th Transatlantic Summer Academy (TASA). This year TASA - "Beyond Clausewitz: Transformations of War", dealt with the transformations of war over time and analysis of the current conflicts in order to highlight the continuities and the changes in warfare and peace-keeping.  It was an intensive interdisciplinary program of lectures, panel discussions and briefings in the fields of politics, economics, law, history and culture. 
 
 
14 – 17 February 2007
The President of ISIE, Miso Dokmanovic, has attended the 7th Young Faces Conference organized by the Center for Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) in Geneva, Switzerland from 14 – 17 February. During the conference, Mr. Dokmanovic has presented the paper “Promotion of democratic governance in the security sector as one of the preconditions for EU membership”.

Ohrid Training – A Huge Success

The Institute for Strategic Research and Education – ISIE organized the Ohrid Training for the Balkan Case Challenge participants from Macedonia. The training was held from 14 – 15 April 2007 in hotel Riviera in Ohrid. The selected participants for the competition received training in presentation skills, career coaching as well as the case competitions (Law Moot Competition, Business case competition, Model United Nations and ICT).          
The special guest of the Ohrid Training was Ms Sonja Todorova, the Regional Representative for the Coca-Cola Company for Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo. Ms Todorova shared her valuable experience with the training participants as well as offered advices concerning career planning, job interviews and their presentation to the possible employers. The organization of the Ohrid Training was supported by the World University Service – Austrian Committee and the Austrian Development Cooperation.

The associates of the Institute for Strategic Research and Education (ISIE), Elena Mihajlova and Miso Dokmanovic, were invited to speak at the panel discussion “Internal Security – Illusion or Reality” organized by the Club of Political Science Students.
The panel discussion was held on 21 December 2006 at the Faculty of law in Skopje. Elena Mihajlova and Miso Dokmanovic joined the representatives of the Ministry of Interior of Macedonia in explaining the concept of human security as well as the challenges of the new security risks for the country and the region.

The President and the Secretary of the ISIE Institute, Miso Dokmanovic and Zoran Hristovski, were invited as speakers at international conference in Bucharest with the topic: "Drafting the First Regional Security Strategy" from 5th - 8th of October 2006. Atlantic Treaty Association and EURISC Foundation organized the event with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.

At the event, speakers coming from the Balkan region countries presented theirs respective national security strategies. After that, there was insightful discussion about making the first draft of the regional security strategy which was followed by recommendations how to improve it in the future. The recommendations from the conference will be presented at the NATO Summit in Riga.

The ISIE associates took active part in the conference and many of their suggestions were implemented in the draft of the regional security strategy. Also, they received valuable experience from the event that thy will use in the future projects.
 
18 June - 13 July 2006
 
Two ISIE associates participated at the summer program of the Academy of European Law within the European University Institute in Florence. The Academy organizes two intensive teaching summer sessions each year. One deals with European Union Law and the other with Human Rights Law.

Mr. Miso Dokmanovic MA participated in the Human Rights Law session in June 2006, where he obtained high - level knowledge in the area of biotechnology and human rights.

Ms. Julija Brsakoska - Bazerkoska MA, participated in the European Union Law session in July 2006, dealing with the current legal issues in the external relations of the European Union.

The lectures at the Academy were held by leading authorities in the respective fields, both from the world of practice and academic world.

In July 2006, the Secretary of the ISIE Institute, Zoran Hristovski, participated at the Summer School for young professionals held in the Slovakian National Defense Academy in Liptovsky Mikulas. Moreover, the summer school was intended for master/doctoral students who are interested in the security policy issues. On that occasion, he had opportunity to meet and exchange experience with the young professionals from different parts of Europe.

In addition, the event was focused on the current major issues in the security policy with the interactive lectures and forum discussions led by distinguished speakers from various Slovak and international organizations such as UN, NATO, OSCE, Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy, George C. Marshall Centre and others.

Furthermore, participants at the event had a unique opportunity to visit and interact with the officers in the Regional Training Centre for the Junior Staff Officers Course (JSOC), which is jointly administered by Great Britain, Netherlands and Slovakia under the auspices of NATO.

Aleksandra Jordanoska, Associate of ISIE, has participated in the 13 th Transatlantic Summer Academy in Bonn. Founded in 1994, the Transatlantic Summer Academy is dedicated to fostering an understanding of the nature and the importance of transatlantic relations and the European integration process.

This year's TASA focused on "The Changing Face of Terrorism", once again offering an exciting and intensive interdisciplinary program. Hence the faculty of the 13 th TASA consisted of scholars and experts from academia, think tanks, international organizations, business, and the media as well as representatives of governments and parliaments.

In addition, the participants of TASA traveled to Berlin, Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and Brussels to visit and to meet officials from the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the Court of Justice of the European Communities, the EU Commission, NATO, the German Parliament (Reichstag) and the German government.

Mr. Sasa Dokmanovic, a junior associate in ISIE, attended the 2006 Economic Policy Summer School. The summer school was organized by the Economic and Social Policy Institute (ESPI) in Belgrade from 10 – 28 July 2006.

He received training in the field of macroeconomics and marketing from leading lectures from ESPI, London School of Economics, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The President of the Board of Executives of the Institute for Strategic Research and Education, Mr. Miso Dokmanovic has attended a conference on globalization in Bangalore, India from 13-20 May 2006. The conference "Where is the globalization heading?" was organized by the British foundation 21 st Century and the Legislature of the State of Karnataka.

Twenty five leaders from all over the world attended the one-week program and discussed the contemporary issues connected to phenomenon of globalization.

Mr. Dokmanovic was fifth person from Macedonia to be invited at 21 st Century Trust event.

The associate of the Institute for Strategic Research and Education, Ms. Elena Mihajlova has attended the Summer School for Future Decision Makers held in June 2006 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The two-week program offered intensive lectures in the field of human rights.

At the same time, the school represented an excellent opportunity for gaining a comparative perspective concerning the protection of human rights in the countries of the region. The event was organized by the Balkan Human Rights Network.

The President of the Board of Executives of the Institute for Strategic Research and Education, Mr. Mišo Dokmanovic has participated in the "Foresight Conference on Global, European and Regional Governance". The conference was held in Bled, Slovenia from 3 - 4 March 2006. The organizers of the conference were the Bled Forun on Europe Association and the Austrian Scientific Office in Ljubljana.

The participants in the conference exchanged views on the possibilities for the development of the foresight research in the region of Western Balkans.
